KCEC Forest Fire Mitigation Update: February 11, 2025 Taos, New Mexico - Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (KCEC) is actively implementing forest fire prevention measures for 2025. The region's lack of precipitation during winter heightens the risk of wildfires as spring approaches. Taos Pueblo Nomadic hunter-gatherers pass through the area leaving behind arrowheads, potshards and pictographs six thousand years ago. About 1,000 years ago the people of Taos Pueblo and Picuris Pueblo inhabit their villages. The Taos Pueblo, which borders the town of Taos on its north side, has been occupied for nearly a millennium. Rio Grande del Norte National Monument Established on March 25, 2013 by Presidential Proclamation The monument includes approximately 310,500 acres of public land, most of which is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape is comprised of rugged, wide open plains at an average elevation of 7,000 feet, dotted by volcanic cones, and cut by steep canyons with rivers tucked away in their depths. The Río Grande carves an 800 foot deep gorge through layers of volcanic basalt flows and ash.
