Establishing a Cultural Connection to Promote Collaboration with Tribal Nations. Many agencies, organizations and people either seek to work with Tribes or are asked to consult and communicate with Tribes; however, many do not know how to and often either get mixed results or none at all. Most often this is due to a lack of knowledge, skills, resources and importantly, an understanding of tribes in general and how to effectively communicate with them. The intent of this workshop or discussion is to provide participants with an opportunity to discuss, learn and formulate a general understanding of tribal history as it relates to the formation of what is now the United States. Further, to expose participants to general cultural views and customs of tribes, provide insight into the hierarchy and organizational structure of tribal governments, that can be used to promote effective Tribal consultation, communication, and collaboration. Most discussions and information are derived from a New Mexico based context; however general lessons can be carried over to other tribal organizations throughout the greater southwest. **Ground rules will be in effect; individuals may find discussions and content offensive, but true learning is based on pushing comfort boundaries. If you cannot be open to discussion with a willingness to hear a particular point of view and recognize the traumatic history of Tribal people, in relation to the federal government and formation of what is now the United States; this workshop may not be for you
